The Advocacy Award recognizes the efforts and contributions of an individual, family member, group or organization towards raising awareness of disability issues and/or work which improves the lives of a person or people with disabilities.
To be consider for this award eligible nominees include:
-an individual living or working in Ottawa, OR a group or organization operating in Ottawa OR can clearly demonstrate how their activities have benefited Ottawa citizens
-an individual, family member, group or organization
The Celebration of People Selection Committee will consider the following factors in the evaluation of nominees for the Advocacy Award:
-Advocates raising awareness of disability issues with a demonstrated commitment to advancing rights and access to services and supports for people with disabilities
-Degree to which the advocacy has involved the able-bodied/mainstream community and helped to build agreement to support positive change for people with disabilities
-Impact of the advocacy in advancing accessibility and inclusion; this includes intended results, as well as unintended impacts (for example, the advocate’s work on behalf of a family member resulted in benefits for other people with disabilities)
-Impact of the advocacy in raising awareness of previously unrecognized or poorly understood issues and/or in contributing to building community capacity
-The Selection Committee may select two recipients in this category to recognize an individual and an organization
